Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter (cold)
- 1/2 cup sugar (for layering)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for dough)
Instructions
- Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a separate bowl. Add in the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Prepare the cold butter by beating it until pliable but still cold.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle and spread the cold butter on two-thirds of the dough.
- Fold the unbuttered third over the buttered section, then fold the other side over it to create layers.
- Roll it out again and repeat the folding process with sugar for 2-3 times.
- Shape the dough into a circle and place it in a greased 9-inch round pan.
- Let it rise for another 30-60 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour until golden and caramelized.
- Let cool before serving.
