- 1/2 cup butter, frozen and grated
- 2–1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 Tbsp dried chives (can substitute parsley)
- 3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 Tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a 9-inch round cake pan with parchment paper.
- Grate the frozen butter and return to the freezer.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and chives.
- Add the frozen butter and shredded cheddar cheese to the flour mixture, tossing to combine.
- Make a well in the center and add buttermilk; stir with a fork until just combined.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently form into a rectangle. Roll the dough to about 3/4 inch thick, then fold into thirds.
- Repeat rolling and folding 3-4 times to create layers. Roll to about 1 inch thick.
- Cut out biscuits using a 3-inch cutter, being careful not to twist the cutter.
- Place biscuits in the prepared pan, one in the center and the rest around it. Freeze for 10 minutes.
- Brush the tops with milk or buttermilk.
- Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden. Brush with melted butter before serving.
Notes
Store baked biscuits at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 8-12 minutes.
