Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40 to 45 crackers)
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk, or dark)
- Optional toppings: chopped nuts, flaky sea salt, sprinkles, crushed peppermint
Instructions
- Prep the pan: Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, then add a sheet of parchment. Arrange the saltines in a single snug layer.
- Make the caramel: In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once bubbling, set a timer for 3 minutes.
- Pour and bake: Carefully pour the hot caramel over the crackers and spread to the edges. Bake at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes until bubbling.
- Chocolate time: Remove from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly. Wait 1-2 minutes until softened, then spread into a smooth layer. Add toppings and press lightly.
- Set and snap: Let cool at room temperature for 20-30 minutes, then refrigerate for another 30-45 minutes until firm. Peel off the liner and break into pieces.
Notes
Store in an airtight tin at room temperature for up to 1 week or freeze for later enjoyment. Avoid moisture to keep the texture crisp.
