Ingredients

- 1 lb fresh green beans (trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces) OR 2 cans (14.5 oz each) canned green beans (drained) OR 16 oz frozen green beans (thawed briefly)
- 1 can (10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup) (Optional: Substitute half with cream of chicken or cream of celery soup)
- 1 cup crispy fried onions (divided)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (or to taste)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp water (to thin the sauce if desired)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare green beans by trimming fresh beans or draining canned beans or thawing frozen beans.
- Blanch fresh or frozen beans in boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water (optional).
- In a large bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup with 1/2 cup shredded cheese, 1/2 cup fried onions, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper. Stir in water if needed to thin out the sauce.
- Add prepared green beans to the bowl and stir gently to coat.
- Pour the mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle remaining fried onions and shredded cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
- Add extra fried onions on top after the first bake for added crunch if desired.
- Return to oven for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until cheese is melted and onions are golden brown.
- Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
You can make this casserole ahead of time and reheat when needed. Add the crispy onions just before final baking to retain their crunch.
