Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup very warm water
  • 21/4 tsp yeast
  • 1 Tbsp sugar (brown or white)
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 21/2 to 2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg, whisked together with 1 Tbsp water

  3. Gradually add remaining flour until the dough pulls away from the edges and is soft but not sticky.
  4. Knead for 2-3 minutes, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 10-15 minutes.

  6. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.
  7. Dump the dough onto a surface, form into a ball, and divide into 8 equal parts.
  8. Roll each piece into a rope about 24 inches long and shape into a pretzel.

  10. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with seasoning or salt.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Brush with melted butter after baking.
  12. Cool on a rack for at least 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a healthier version, use whole wheat flour and olive oil instead of butter. Serve warm with dips like Greek yogurt or hummus for added nutrition.
