Sugar Cookies with Vanilla Frosting

Delicious sugar cookies topped with fluffy vanilla frosting, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (full fat)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp half and half (more as needed)
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt for 20 seconds. Set aside.
  2. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy.
  3. Mix in the large egg until combined, then blend in the sour cream, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  4. With the mixer set on low, slowly add in the flour mixture until just combined.
  5. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions. Shape into disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) during the last 20 minutes of chilling.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into shapes.
  8. Transfer the cut cookies to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes until the cookies are nearly set but not browned.
  10. Cool on a wire rack.
  11. For the frosting, blend together softened butter, powdered sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract until fluffy. Adjust consistency as needed.
  12. Once cookies are cool, frost and store in an airtight container.

Notes

Cookies can be stored at room temperature for about a week. They can also be frozen for longer storage.
